Transforming Outdoor Living in Mt. Pleasant: A Stunning Landscape Design

10/25/2024

If you're dreaming of an outdoor retreat that combines elegance, comfort, and functionality, this recent Mt. Pleasant landscaping project will inspire you to take the next step toward transforming your own backyard. At Brownswood Nursery & Landscape, our  landscape design team works to create personalized outdoor spaces that extend your home’s living area and match your lifestyle. Whether it’s a cozy spot to gather with family, a luxurious poolside oasis, or a serene garden escape, we bring our expertise to every project.

This Mt. Pleasant backyard transformation was designed with a focus on seamless outdoor living. A Bluestone patio with Old Carolina® brick accents became the perfect setting for a custom outdoor fireplace, offering a cozy ambiance for cool evenings. The Belgard® Dublin Cobble® pool deck, framed by a Weston Stone™ wall, added a touch of sophistication while maintaining durability for high-traffic areas. Steel-edged Plantation Mix walkways connected the space, offering functionality and charm.
Lush, newly landscaped garden beds brought this outdoor retreat to life with a diverse mix of trees, shrubs, and perennials that thrive in Mt. Pleasant’s coastal environment. Key plantings included Magnolia, Crape Myrtle, Japanese Blueberry Trees, and Nelly Stevens Holly for structure and shade, complemented by vibrant flowering plants such as Hydrangeas, Drift® Roses, Bougainvillea, and Salvia. Additional accents like Sweet Grass, Shenandoah Switch Grass, and Variegated Shell Ginger added texture and movement to the design, creating a dynamic yet cohesive look. These thoughtful plant selections not only enhance the landscape’s beauty but also ensure low-maintenance growth and sustainability.

To complete the transformation, Empire Zoysia sod created a lush, welcoming lawn, while updated irrigation and lighting systems ensured long-lasting health and functionality for the landscape. Custom lighting elements, including uplights and path lights, enhanced the design, creating a magical ambiance for nighttime enjoyment. With every detail tailored to the client’s needs, this Mt. Pleasant landscape design delivers a perfect blend of aesthetics and practicality.

Transforming Historic Charleston Landscapes: A Downtown Showcase

9/10/2024

Since 1978, Brownswood Nursery & Landscape has been proudly serving Charleston, South Carolina, offering expertise in everything from growing plants to landscape design and construction. Our dedication to horticultural excellence and seamless collaboration across our nursery, garden center, landscape design, and landscape installation divisions allows us to deliver extraordinary results for our clients. One of our recent projects - a breathtaking side and backyard transformation of a historic home in downtown Charleston - is a prime example of how we bring our clients’ visions to life.
This project beautifully combined Southern charm with modern functionality, demonstrating the hallmark of Charleston landscape design. The walkway and patio were crafted with select bluestone edged in classic brick, perfectly complementing the historic elegance of the home. Centennial Brass lighting was added to enhance the space with warmth and subtlety, creating a magical ambiance for evening gatherings. The irrigation system was updated with a Wi-Fi controller featuring rain and freeze sensors, ensuring the new landscape remains lush and vibrant throughout Charleston’s unpredictable weather.

The plantings for this project were carefully selected to thrive in Charleston’s climate while adding timeless beauty. Our team incorporated an array of both sun- and shade-loving plants, including Agapanthus, Autumn Fern, Bee Balm, Butterfly Bush, Camellia sasanqua, Farfugium, Gardenia, Hydrangeas, Lantana, Liriope, Rosemary, and Shell Ginger. This thoughtfully curated mix created a stunning landscape full of vibrant color, texture, and seasonal interest. Each plant was chosen not only for its visual appeal but also for its ability to thrive in Charleston’s coastal environment, ensuring a low-maintenance and enduring design.

What sets Brownswood Nursery & Landscape apart from other Charleston landscapers is the collaborative effort of our expert teams. From our nursery professionals growing healthy, resilient plants to our design and construction teams meticulously executing every detail, each step of the process reflects decades of experience and a commitment to excellence. Avoid Costly Mistakes - Start with a Landscape Plan

8/29/2024

THE BENEFITS OF PROFeSSIONAL DESIGN

Landscape design brings together plants, patios, walkways, pergolas, water features, landscape lighting, and more to create a space that is attractive, functional, and the perfect complement to your home.

Whether you're updating an existing landscape or starting fresh with a new home build, partnering with a professional designer will make a huge difference in the outcome of your project.

While there are many benefits of a well-designed landscape, three of the biggest are:

AVOID MISTAKES THAT COST EXTRA MONEY & TIME
Starting with a professional design for your landscape saves both money and time by reducing the likelihood of DIY mistakes. (Think re-planting or hardscape/structure demolition down the road if landscape elements don't play well together.)

EXPERTS TAKE CARE OF THE DETAILS
A skilled landscape designer creates a plan that takes into consideration all factors that affect your landscape such as:
  • sun/shade
  • soil composition
  • grading/drainage
  • presence of wildlife
These details are critical for finding the right plants for the right places in your landscape and may also impact decisions on hardscape or other materials to be used. Your landscape designer can also offer guidance on obtaining a property survey and understanding HOA/ARB guidelines.

PEACE OF MIND BEFORE BREAKING GROUND
A comprehensive landscape design is your road map for a successful transformation. It ensures all elements of the design fit together seamlessly and allows you to prioritize implementation to fit your preferences and/or budget. By going through the discovery, design, and revision process with your designer, you can rest easy knowing you'll love the end results!

LOVE THE PROCESS & THE RESULTS

Our professional landscape designers collaborate with you. They work to understand your vision, thoroughly analyze your landscape to make their best recommendations, and maintain open and clear communication throughout the length of your project.
Our team will provide tools for you to discover the wants and needs you have for your landscape, budgeting for the overall project and the first phase of implementation, and discuss the following with you before beginning your design:

  • Designing for function. The first step in landscape design is to determine the purpose of the space. Will it be a place for relaxation? For entertaining? For children to play? Once you know the purpose of the space, you can start to plan the layout and select the appropriate plants and hardscape elements.

  • Creating a sense of place. The next step is to create a sense of place in the landscape. This can be done by selecting plants or hardscape elements that suit a preferred theme.

  • Using plants to create interest. Plants are what give the landscape life. They provide color, texture, and interest. When choosing plants, it is important to consider the size, shape, and color of the plants as well as the climate and soil conditions.

  • Using hardscape elements to create structure. Hardscape elements such as patios, walkways, and walls provide structure to the landscape. They can also be used to create different areas in the space.

  • Using water features to create interest. Water features such as fountains, pools, and waterfalls can add interest to the landscape. They can also provide a place for relaxation and contemplation.
