Many of the plants we offer are grown right here at Brownswood Nursery! With decades of horticultural experience, our Nursery Professionals grow dozens of different trees, shrubs, perennials, and grasses that are acclimated to our climate and are ready to thrive in your landscape!

Carolina Midnight Loropetalum

Our Brownswood Grown Carolina Midnight Loropetalum is known for its beautiful, rich burgundy foliage and its delicate pink flowers: an eye-catching combination. This low-maintenance plant thrives in a variety of conditions and is drought-tolerant.

Dianella 'Baby Bliss'

Our Brownswood Grown Dianella 'Baby Bliss' boasts cool, blue-green foliage, with tiny purple blooms in the spring. It thrives in part shade to full sun, salt-tolerant and drought-resistant once established, and will reach about 12-18in in height.

CAROLINA SAPPHIRE CYPRESS

Carolina Sapphire Cypress has silvery blue-green, fragrant foliage that's as beautiful as its name suggests. Great for privacy, a focal point, or even a living Christmas tree. Matures to approximately 20-30' tall x 15-20' wide. Part to full sun. Deer non-preferred.

Elephant ears (alocasia/colocasia)

Our Brownswood Grown Alocasia and Colocasia make excellent indoor plants: perfect for adding a tropical feel to your home in the colder months. In the warmer months they are perfect for specimen planting or as container centerpieces.

Bald Cypress

​Our Brownswood Grown Bald Cypress boasts bright green foliage through spring and summer, and turns a reddish-brown in fall. Surprisingly, it is both drought-tolerant and can handle having wet feet, making it an excellent landscape problem-solver.

Wax Myrtle

Our Brownswood Grown Wax Myrtle is known for its attractive foliage and unique growth habit. It is easy to care for and can thrive in a variety of conditions including high salinity, drought, poor soil, and wet areas. And they're deer non-preferred!

Shell Ginger

​This variegated Shell Ginger (Alpinia zerumbet) is a perennial species of ginger, native to East Asia that thrives in warmer climates. This plant does best in part shade but can acclimate to full sun. Great in the landscape and containers!

blueberry bushes

Your landscape can be as delicious as it is beautiful! Our Brownswood Grown blueberries are perfect for adding edible attractions to your yard. Remember planting multiple blueberry bush varieties encourages cross-pollinating, which can lead to a higher fruit yield. Varieties we grow can include, Climax, Premier, and Woodard.

Tractor Seat Plant

Tractor Seat plants (Farfugium) are growing now at the nursery. This evergreen perennial is one of our guests' favorites. Tractor Seats are unique in that they love shade, bloom a yellow, daisy-like flower in late fall/early winter, and are deer non-preferred.

Podocarpus Japanese Yew

​Podocarpus Japanese Yew is a lush, hardy evergreen that can thrive under a wide variety of conditions. Perfect for privacy screening! Maintainable at 6-8' tall x 6-8' wide and deer non-preferred!

Miscanthus Adagio

​Miscanthus Adagio is an excellent color-changing, ornamental grass. Plumes are pink-tinged in summer and gradually turn creamy white in fall. This perennial grass grows up to 3-4ft tall and wide. Deer non-preferred!

Northern Sea Oats

Tolerates a variety of sun, soil, and environmental conditions - including moist soils AND salt spray! Bamboo-like foliage changes with the seasons, from blue-green to yellow-brown, depending on sun exposure. Seed heads make excellent additions to dried arrangements. Clumps grow to 3-4' tall x 2-3' wide.

Chaste Tree (Vitex)

​Chaste Tree (Vitex) is a flowering favorite that adds a bold splash of color to the landscape late spring into summer. Useful as a large shrub or small, ornamental tree, the sun-loving Chaste Tree grows quickly to 10-15' tall and wide and is easily maintainable with pruning.

Crape Myrtle Trees

Sometimes referred to as the Lilacs of the South, Crape Myrtle Trees are hardy, fast-growing shade trees that provide weeks of colorful blooms in shades ranging from white to bright pink. We grow multiple varieties of this Southern favorite in our growing fields here at the Nursery. Visit the Garden Center soon to choose your favorite!

Louisiana Iris

Louisiana Irises are adapted to wetland areas and a variety of soil types, making them an excellent choice for Charleston landscapes. This season, we are growing a number of colorful varieties including: Ann Chowning (shown), Jeri (dark purple), Red Velvet Elvis (red), Beale Street (light purple), and Waihi Wedding (white). Mature size is approximately 2-3' tall and wide. Prefers sun to part shade.

Lomandra

The Lomandra varieties we grow at the nursery come in a range of mature sizes and shades of green, offering a selection of vibrant, evergreen grass options tailored to fit any landscape size. Each variety is both deer non-preferred and drought-tolerant, ensuring a lush and resilient addition to your outdoor space.

Sweet grass

Sweet Grass! We grow this Charleston favorite from locally harvested seed here at the nursery. This hardy, perennial grass remains an attractive shade of green throughout spring and summer, then offers showy, cotton-candy-pink plumes in fall. This fall display of color catches the eye of Lowcountry natives as well as newcomers to the area, making it one of our most popular plants. 1 and 3-gallon pots of Sweet Grass (Pink Muhly Grass) are available for purchase right now at our Garden Center.

GRACEFUL BAMBOO

Are you seeking a taste of the tropics with the added benefit of privacy? Bamboo will do the trick! Bamboo grows fast to form a dense screen with feathery foliage that dances in the breeze. And don't worry about an invasive root system - our Graceful Bamboo is clumping, making it easy to manage!  Mature size: Varies depending on variety. Prefers Part to Full Sun.

JACK FROST LIGUSTRUM

Jack Frost Ligustrum is growing (and blooming!) right now at the nursery. This variegated variety is a reliable performer in the landscape,  offering foliage interest year round and plentiful spring blooms. Prefers part to full sun.

First Knight Pennisetum

First Knight Pennisetum - a hardy ornamental grass that matures to a stunning, deep burgundy-red. Great for containers or the landscape. A true show-stopper!

Southern Indica Azaleas

Southern Indica Azaleas are growing and available for sale now at the Nursery! These Spring-blooming beauties have been part of the Brownswood Nursery story for over 40 years as one of our very first offerings, and we are still proudly growing them today! Come visit us for a tour of our growing fields and take home a few of these gorgeous shrubs. Your yard will be bursting at the seams with color come Spring!

Red Cluster Bottlebrush

​Our fast-growing, Red Cluster Bottlebrush shrubs offer showy, pollinator-attracting blooms. A great choice for screening or a specimen planting.

Confederate Rose

Your eyes don't deceive you - This shrub has white AND pink blooms! The blooms of the fall-blooming Confederate Rose (Hibiscus mutabilis) change from white to light pink, then to a darker pink as the bloom ages.

BEE BALM

Attract droves of pollinators with the colorful pink, purple, and red blooms of our newest bee balm varieties. These perennial favorites are growing now and will be available for sale at our Garden Center this Spring.

SHAMROCK INKBERRY HOLLY

Small in stature, but big in versatility, the Shamrock Inkberry Holly we grow here at the Nursery is suitable for just about any spot in the landscape. This compact native evergreen shrub makes a great replacement for boxwood shrubs here along the coast as it is tolerant of wet feet. It is also disease and pest resistant, tolerant of salt, and deer non-preferred. Matures to 3-4' tall and wide, easily shaped with pruning. Adaptable to sun or shade.

Elephant Ear Mojito (Colocasia)

​Colocasia Mojito is one of the showiest Elephant Ear varieties we grow at the Nursery - each leaf is unique! Mojito performs well in the landscape or in containers and prefers part shade to shade. Plant now to enjoy its colorful patterns year after year!

Dwarf Yaupon Holly

​This sturdy evergreen native is a tidy, mounded shrub that can be used as a low maintenance foundation planting, low hedge, or border. Once established, its tolerance of adverse conditions such as drought or occasional flooding proves to be an asset in Lowcountry landscapes. Dwarf Yaupon Holly shrubs can be purchased at our Nursery in shades of solid green or green with burgundy new growth.
