Cecil and Katherine Williams started Williams Nursery in the late 1960s in their backyard off of Folly Road on James Island where they sold and grew a wide range of plants including fruit trees and azaleas. In 1978, daughter Terre and her husband joined the family business and, together, they founded present-day Brownswood Nursery™ at 1290 Brownswood Road, Johns Island.
Terre’s husband, Wyatt Stevens, began the company’s landscape division in the 1990s. Over 20 years later, Terre’s eldest son Ryan Watkins joined the team as the third generation in this successful family business. And in January 2015, after graduating from Clemson University with a degree in horticulture, Terre's youngest son, Drew Stevens, came on board.
Both Ryan and Drew have worked in many of the roles here at Brownswood - from serving guests in our Garden Center to managing design and landscape projects. After much hard work, team building, and leadership, Ryan now serves as the company's CEO and Drew serves as COO. In early 2024, Ryan and Drew accepted full ownership of the company and are looking forward to many exciting years to come.

Brownswood Nursery is Charleston's LArgest Nursery & DEsign-Build Firm.
Our nursery is open for both residential and wholesale customers. We have developed approximately 20 acres of its sprawling acreage for the Garden Center, Growing Operation, Design Studio, and Installation Division. This large parcel allows many of the plants we sell to be grown right here at our nursery on Johns Island. We offer everything from 4-inch annuals to 15-foot Live Oaks. Our desire is to provide Charleston residents with beautiful plants at reasonable prices.
Our Certified Nursery Professionals are trained to help you select the perfect additions to your garden and advise you on how to best care for them during and after planting. Although we are centrally located between Downtown Charleston, James Island, West Ashley, Kiawah Island, Seabrook Island, and Wadmalaw Island, we serve many customers from Ravenel, Hollywood, Mount Pleasant, North Charleston, Summerville, Moncks Corner as well.
