How to Transform Limited Space into a Private ParadisESometimes, the most breathtaking outdoor spaces aren’t sprawling estates - they’re the hidden gems tucked behind neighborhood fences. This Johns Island landscape is the perfect example: a modest yard transformed into a stunning private retreat. With thoughtful design and expert craftsmanship, Brownswood Nursery & Landscape turned a small, everyday backyard into a sanctuary for outdoor living. What was once a compact, exposed space is now a layered oasis complete with a breezy pergola, built-in stone countertops, and a cozy firepit set atop an oyster shell pad - each detail intentionally placed to create function, beauty, and serenity. Designing for Small Spaces: Think Layers, Not Limit Small yards demand creativity, and this transformation proves that size is never a limitation - it’s an opportunity for innovation. Every element serves a purpose:
Creating Privacy and Flow In tight-knit neighborhoods, privacy is precious. The result feels open yet intimate - a seamless blend of comfort and elegance. By layering flowers and foliage in pale hues - whites, silvers, and soft pastels - you can create a captivating evening retreat that glows after the sun sets. These “moonlight gardens” are designed to shimmer in the soft light of the moon while filling the night air with fragrance, turning your outdoor space into a peaceful sanctuary. At Brownswood Nursery's Garden Center, we currently have a wide selection of plants that sparkle in the evening glow: from shimmering choices like Aztec Grass and Dusty Miller, to fragrant bloomers such as Gardenias and Bolero™ Roses, to soft perennials like White Plumbago and Variegated Flax Lily. Moonlight Garden Plants for Sunny Areas When creating a moonlight garden in a sunny location, choose plants that love the light and reward you with flowers and foliage that reflect and glow. These sun-loving varieties are perfect for planting in open beds or borders where they will receive direct sunlight for much of the day.
Moonlight Garden Plants for Shaded Areas Shade gardens can be every bit as enchanting when planted with varieties that shimmer and stand out in lower light. By mixing glossy leaves, fragrant blooms, and variegated or silver foliage, you can create a garden that glows softly even under tree canopies or beside shaded patios.

Kiawah Island, with its pristine beaches, scenic marshlands, and lush coastal beauty, is a dream location for many homeowners. However, creating and maintaining a thriving landscape on the island comes with unique challenges, including managing sandy soils, salt exposure, and a resident deer population that can wreak havoc on carefully designed gardens. Brownswood Nursery & Landscape is here to help. With years of expertise in Kiawah Island landscaping, we specialize in creating stunning, sustainable landscapes that overcome these challenges and reflect the natural beauty of the Lowcountry. In a recent project, our design and installation team partnered with a Kiawah Island homeowner to enhance their outdoor space. The result was a landscape that not only thrives in the island’s environment but also incorporates plants that are deer non-preferred, minimizing damage caused by foraging deer. By blending native plants with carefully selected non-native species, we ensured the landscape was both functional and visually striking. Check out the video and photos below for a closer look at the transformation and the attention to detail we bring to every project. Photography by Bailey Baker for Charleston Home + Design Magazine Have Deer and Looking to Add a Japanese Maple? While deer in Kiawah have been known to nibble Japanese Maples, it’s still possible to enjoy this stunning tree by practicing various deterrent methods. While no method is ever truly deer-proof, here are a few tips to help increase your chances of success. Generally, trees with a canopy height above 4-5 feet are less vulnerable to grazing. We would recommend an upright Japanese Maple, as opposed to a weeping variety. For the same reason, we recommend installing a more mature tree in your landscape as saplings tend to be particularly susceptible to deer. Strategic placement can also help reduce the risk of nibbling. In the landscape above, the Japanese Maple has been thoughtfully planted near the house (close enough for added protection, yet with enough space to accommodate its mature size). It's also surrounded by Farfugium giganteum or 'Tractor Seat Plant', which is typically deer non-preferred and may deter deer from browsing further.
