Privacy Plants for Lowcountry Landscapes

1/30/2024

Trees and Shrubs FOR Screening

Transform your landscape into an outdoor sanctuary with the addition of privacy plantings. The trees and shrubs listed here will help you achieve year-round privacy and multiple seasons of interest. And if you live in a deer-prone area as many of us on Johns Island, Kiawah Island, and Seabrook Island do, you'll be glad to know that many of these selections are deer non-preferred!

Rich green foliage all year!

While attractive planted as a specimen or in a small grouping, Green Giant Arborvitae is also an excellent choice for fast-growing privacy along your property line. Trees grow to approximately 30-50' tall x 12-15' wide. Deer non-preferred.

Mood Ring™ Podocarpus
Bronze-pink new growth
Who says a privacy screen has to be solid shades of green?  Enjoy the changing color show as this shrub goes through its growing season. Mature size: approximately 10-15' tall x 3-4' wide. Deer non-preferred.

Carolina Sapphire Cypress

As beautiful as its name suggests

Silvery blue-green, fragrant foliage makes this evergreen stand out from the crowd. While it is showy enough to use as a specimen planting, it also makes an excellent screen! Matures to approximately 20-30' tall x 15-20' wide. Part to full sun. Deer non-preferred.

Tea Olive

The fragrance is unbelievable!

A guest favorite, this shrub is useful as a specimen, hedge, or screening plant. But the real excitement happens in spring and fall when the days are warm and evenings are cool. Intensely fragrant flower clusters appear to perfume the air! Matures to approximately 20-30' tall x 15-20' wide. Part to full sun. Deer non-preferred.

Graceful Bamboo
Easy care, fast growing screen

Are you seeking a taste of the tropics with the added benefit of privacy? Clumping Bamboo will do the trick! Bamboo grows fast to form a dense screen with feathery foliage that dances in the breeze. Mature size: 20-25' tall x 6-8' wide. Prefers Part to Full Sun.

Yaupon Holly
For the birds!

Our native Yaupon holly comes in various forms. As an upright shrub or tree, it provides loads (LOADS!) of fruit for songbirds. These bright red candy-colored berries contrast beautifully with the small leaves of this evergreen. Our upright shrub grows to approximately 10-15' tall. Deer non-preferred.

For Planting Success:

We highly recommend amending the soil in your planting area with a Brownswood Premium Planting Mix as well as a starter fertilizer such as Espoma Organic Bio-tone® Starter Plus to give your new plants their best start. You can find our Planting Guide at the link below. It provides planting instructions and helpful information about watering and getting new plants established. We look forward to seeing you at the Garden Center!
